SOCIAL COHESION WITHIN THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND ITS ROLE IN BUILDING URBAN IDENTITY AND ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE URBAN DEVELOPMENT

Abstract

Sustainable urban development means the development, and stability of urban communities, through the study of urban problems, and knowledge of the deterioration in the fabric of the urban environment, and solutions have been developed that can achieve sustainability.

The research studies the role of architecture in the formation of social cohesion within the urban environment and its role in the urban sustainability through compatibility between social economy, cultural movement and environmental resources in the present and the future. The problem of the research is the presence of shortcomings in relationship between man and place within the urban environment in the Libyan cities, which negatively affected the process of achieving urban sustainability.

The research aims to highlight the role of social cohesion within the public spaces in the built environment in achieving sustainable urban development, this is done by defining a set of indicators of social cohesion variable, and analysing these indicators and evaluating their role in building urban identity and strengthening the sense of affiliation with the place, through the impact of human and social events, activities, and relationships with others within public, the research concludes that social cohesion is one of the most important pillars of building an urban identity and achieve sustainability.
